United Madurese Movement rejects East Java gubernatorial re-electionPamekasan, East Java (ANTARA News) - The United Madurese Movement (GMB) has rejected the regional General Election Commission (KPUD) here to carry out an East Java gubernatorial re-election in two districts. GMB also rejected the local KPUD which will recalculate the results of the second round of the East Java gubernatorial election in Pamekasan as decided by the constitutional court (MK) on Tuesday (Dec 2, 2008), GMB coordinator, Ismail Marzuki said here Wednesday. In addition, GMB believed that the recalculation may adversely affect security in Pamekasan, he said, adding that it would also cause a decline in people`s confidence in the implementation of democracy in Pamekasan. MK on Tuesday (Dec 2) instructed the regional KPUD to conduct the gubernatorial re-election in two districts namely Bangkalan and Sampang and recalculate the vote count in Pamekasan district. MK issued the instruction after it accepted part of Khofifah Indar Parawansa-Mudjiono pair`s objection to the recent vote counts by the East Java provincial KPUD. The re-election in the two areas and repetition of the vote counts should be carried out within 60 days after the issuance of the MK decision on December 2, 2008. In the results of vote counts made by the East Java KPUD, the Soekarwo-Saifullah Yusuf pair gained 7.7229.944 votes (50,20 percent), while Khofifah Indar Parawansa-Mudjiono pair got 7.669.721 votes (49,80 percent), in favour to the former. Thus, based on the KPUD vote counts results, the first pair won the gubernatorial election. However, provisional results of the quick counts of the second round of the East Java gubernatorial race, which was held on November 4, 2008, showed that the Khofifah Indar Parawansa-Mudjiono pair managed to collect 50.83 percent of the votes, while Soekarwo-Saifullah Yusuf pair got 49.17 percent. Ismail, who also acted as chairman of the successful team said that his side has sibmitted a written objection to the re-election and re-calculation, to the regional KPUDs. The first round of the gubernatorial race on July 23, 2008 was participated in by five pairs, comprising Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mudjiono (supported by a coalition of 12 political parties), Sutjipto and Ridwan Hisjam (PDI-P), Soenarjo and Ali Maschan Moesa (Golkar Party), Achmady and Suhartono (PKB), and Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf (Democratic party and PAN). Only two pairs, namely Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mudjiono (Ka-ji), and Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf (Kar-sa), competed in the second race. Khofifah was former minister for Women`s Empowerment, and Saifullah Yusuf was former minister for Accelerated Development of Disadvantaged Regions. The winner in the East Java gubernatorial election will lead the province of 37.7 million people in the 2008-2013 term of office.
Mabes Polri Akan Umumkan Polisi Nakal, SeninJakarta (ANTARA News) - Mabes Polri menurut rencana, Senin, akan mengumumkan para polisi nakal, karena mereka terlibat berbagai pelanggaran dalam dua bulan terakhir ini. "Mereka yang dikategorikan sebagai polisi nakal ini merupakan hasil evaluasi selama Oktober hingga November 2008 ," kata Kepala Divisi Humas Polri, Irjen Pol Abubakar Nataprawira, di Jakarta, Minggu. Ia mengatakan, pengumuman terbuka itu akan disampaikan oleh ketua tim "Operasi Bersih" Polri Komjen Pol Yusuf Manggarabarani yang kini menjadi Inspektur Pengawasan Umum (Irwasum) Polri. "Nanti akan disebutkan, siapa oknum polisi yang membekingi judi, pembalakan liar dan lain-lainnya," katanya menegaskan. Bahkan, oknum polisi yang melakukan pembiaran kejahatan juga akan diumumkan. Informasi yang dihimpun ANTARA menyebutkan, sejumlah perwira tinggi dan menengah Polri kini telah menjalani pemeriksaan di Mabes Polri terkait dengan kasus yang terjadi di daerahnya. Diduga, pemeriksaan itu terkait dengan "Operasi Bersih" yang kini digelar oleh Mabes Polri. Polda Metro Jaya juga sedang memeriksa enam perwira karena diduga melakukan pembiaran terkait dengan kasus judi yang terjadi di Hotel The Sultan, Jakarta Pusat. Lokasi itu hanya berjarak sekitar 100 meter dari ruang kerja Kapolda Metro Jaya. Kasus judi ini dibongkar oleh Mabes Polri dengan menangkap 16 tersangka. Enam perwira ini pun dijatuhi sanksi, berupa penundaan kenaikan pangkat selama enam bulan.

President Yudhoyono arrives in Washington for G-20 summit

Washington DC (ANTARA News ) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, at 1 am local time, Friday, to attend the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit. Greeted by Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat, Yudhoyono and his entourage immediately proceeded to Washington DC. In Washington DC, Friday, the head of state was scheduled to hold a meeting with members of the US-Indonesia Society (USINDO). The meeting's theme was "US-Indonesia: Partnership among Democracies in addressing Current International Challenges". Following the meeting with USINDO members, Yudhoyono would have a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and later attend a banquet hosted by US President George W Bush at the White House. On Saturday (Nov. 15), the President will attend the G-20 Summit to be held at the National Building Museum and formally titled "Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy". The G-20 is comprised of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, Britain and the United States. After the summit, Yudhoyono will hold a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The next day (Sunday, Nov. 16), the President and his entourage will leave the US for Mexico City. From Mexico, he would go to Brazil where he would arrive on November 18. His next stop would be Peru where he would attend the 16th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit from November 20 to 24. (ANTARA News) - Harga saham di hampir semua bursa Asia naik menyusul
keputusan bank sentral China memotong suku bunga ke tingkat terendah
dalam hampir satu dekade demi mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi negara itu,
namun bursa India terperosok gara-gara serangan teroris di Mumbai yang
menewaskan 80 orang.
BHP Billiton Ltd yang volume penjualannya
ke China berlipat dalam dua tahun terakhir ini, naik 5,5 persen setelah
China menurunkan suku bunga pada tingkat terendah dalam 11 tahun
terakhir sehingga harga-harga komoditas merangsek lagi ke atas.
Harga
saham Komatsu Ltd yang menguasai 17 persen pasar alat-alat berat di
China menguat 4,7 persen, namun indeks berjangka S&P CNX Nifty
kumpulan saham-saham India di Singapura tertekan 1,8 persen setelah
sekelompok orang bersenjatakan senapan mesin dan granat menyerang hotel
bintang lima di India.
Di bursa Tokyo, indeks MSCI Asia Pacific
terangkat 1,5 persen menjadi 81,30 poin yang adalah kenaikan ketiga
kali berturut-turut di pekan ini, namun gaungnya masih belum bisa
mengangkat indeks ke titik sebelum krisis global mempengaruhi bursa
Jepang di mana selama krisis indeks telah jatuh 49 persen.
Pagi
ini waktu Tokyo, indeks Nikkei 225 terkatrol 2,7 persen menjadi
8.432,86 poin, sementara di bursa saham Asia lainnya indeks rata-rata
dibuka menguat.
Bank Rakyat China (bank sentral China) kemarin
memangkas suku bunga pinjaman acuan sebanyak 108 basis poin menjadi
5,58 persen, kurang dari tiga minggu setelah pemerintah mengumumkan
paket stimulus ekonomi senilai 4 triliun yuan (586 miliar dolar AS).
Di
kawasan lain, Uni Eropa juga menggelontorkan paket serupa namun
nilainya lebih rendah, 256 miliar dolar AS atau 200 miliar euro.
China
adalah mitra dagang terbesar Jepang dan Australia sekaligus penyumbang
terbesar bagi pertumbuhan ekonomi dunia selama tahun lalu.

Beberapa
jam sebelum bursa Asia dibuka, di New York, indeks Standard &
Poor's 500 memotong kecenderungan turunnya dengan berbalik naik 3,5
persen dan mencatat kenaikan 18 persen dalam empat hari belakangan ini.
Pengumuman
Presiden terpilih Barack Obama tentang penunjukkan mantan Gubernur
Federal Reserve Paul Volcker sebagai kepala dewan penasihat ekonomi
telah memulihkan kepercayaan pasar.
"Pencalonan Volcker membuat
kebijakan ekonomi Obama menjadi lebih jelas. Para investor kini
menunggu pemerintah mengimplementasikan langkah-langkah lebih tegas
untuk memajukan ekonomi AS," kata Mitsushige Akino, yang bekerja pada
bank investasi Ichiyoshi Investment Management Co yang mengelola dana
468 juta dolar AS.
Di samping BHP dan Komatsu, saham besar
lainnya seperti Fortescue Metals Group Ltd yang menjual bijih besi

Krisis
kredit dan gelombang gagal bayar pada lembaga-lembaga keuangan yang
jumlahnya mencapai 1 triiun dolar AS telah mendorong bank sentral dan
pemerintah seluruh dunia berbarengan memotong suku bunga dan menggenjot
konsumsi untuk menahan kontraksi ekonomi global.
Dana Moneter
Internasional memperkirakan, bulan ini AS, Eropa dan Jepang akan
mengalami resesi simultannya yang pertama di era pasca Perang Dunia
Kedua.
Di New York, harga minyak mentah untuk pengiriman Januari
naik 7,2 persen menjadi 54,44 dolar AS, atau turun 63 persen dari rekor
harga tertinggi 147,27 dolar AS yang dicetak pada 11 Juli 2008,
demikian pula dengan harga transaksi berjangka Tembaga yang untuk
pengiriman Maret nanti naik 2,3 persen.
Panasonic Corp yang
sahamnya telah diturunkan skalanya oleh Merrill Lynch & Co setelah
produsen barang elektronik terbesar dunia ini memotong proyeksi besaran
laba operasionalnya lebih dari 30 persen, melemah 4,1 persen menjadi
1.292 yen.
"Perekonomian global tetap memburuk dan ini bukan
masanya bagi investor untuk merasa aman. Volume transaksi yang tipis
menunjukkan betapa orang tidak yakin dengan masa depan pasar," kata

York (ANTARA News) - Saham-saham AS jatuh ke posisi terendah dalam lima
setengah tahun terakhir pada Rabu waktu setempat, setelah data
mengungkapkan ekonomi AS mengalami kemerosotan tajam dan Federal
Reserve mengakui risiko dari sebuah resesi panjang.
Indeks Dow
Jones Industrial Average jatuh 427,47 poin (5,07 persen) menjadi
berakhir pada 7.997,28. Ini untuk pertama kalinya indeks saham
blue-chip ditutup di bawah 8.000 sejak 31 Maret 2003.
Indeks komposit Nasdaq merosot 96,85 poin (6,53 persen) menjadi 1.386,42, level terendah sejak 14 April 2003.
Sementara
indeks Standard & Poor's 500 mundur lagi 52,54 poin (6,12 persen)
menjadi 806,58, terendah dalam lima setengah tahun.
Laporan
suram pemerintah menunjukkan sebuah rekor penurunan dalam harga
konsumen dan sebuah rekor terendah dalam memulai pembangunan perumahan
serta para produsen mobil yang kesulitan meminta Kongres untuk sebuah
penalangan (bailout) dalam dua hari berturut-turut.
"Pembicaraan
bantuan kepada produsen otomotif di Washington tampak gagal dan laporan
ekonomi memberikan kesan sebuah resesi mendalam," kata Al Goldman,
analis dari Wachovia Securities.
Departemen Tenaga Kerja
melaporkan bahwa harga konsumen AS jatuh 1,0 persen pada Oktober,
penurunan paling curam sejak data pertama kali dipublikasikan pada
Februari 1947.
Penurunan indeks harga konsumen (IHK) terjadi secara menyeluruh, kecuali hanya makanan yang masih naik.
IHK inti, tidak termasuk harga makanan dan energi, merosot 0,1 persen.
"Inflasi
harga konsumen telah tiba-tiba memciut kedalam keblikannya, karena
pelambatan tiba-tiba dalam pertumbuhan ekonomi telah mendorong
penurunan tajam harga energi, sementara sangat lemahnya permintaan
domestik menempatkan kecenderungan menurunnya tekanan pada harga ritel
di banyak saluran ritel utama, terutama komputer dan elektronika," kata
Brian Bethune, analis pada IHS Global Insight.
Sementara
departemen perdagangan melaporkan bahwa pembangunan rumah baru jatuh ke
jumlah terkecil sejak data ini mulai dipublikasikan pada Januari 1959.
Perumahan
awal (housing starts) turun 38,8 persen dalam basis 12-bulan meski
pemerintah berupaya memperbaiki aliran kredit dan menahan terus
meningkatnya penyitaan rumah di tengah kejatuhan pasar perumahan pada
pertengahan 2006.
Izin untuk membangun rumah baru, sebuah
indikator dari aktivitas mendatang, jatuh 12,0 persen menjadi ke posisi
terendah sejak data dipublikasikan pada Januari 1960, dan turun 40,1
persen dari Oktober 2007.
Penurunan perumahan telah mencapai
dasarnya, kata para analis. Pejabat AS mengatakan bahwa koreksi turun
ekonomi yang sedang berlangsung membutuhkan pemulihan besar-besaran di
pasar perumahan.
Eksekutif puncak General Motors, Ford dan
Chrylser kembali ke Capitol Hill untuk kali kedua hari berturut-turut
meminta penalangan darurat dari komite Senat.
Saham GM turun 9,71 persen menjadi 2,79 dolar dan Ford turun 25,0 persen menjadi 1,26 dolar AS.
Di
antara saham-saham yang jadi fokus, Citigroup jatuh 23,44 persen
menjadi 6,40 dolar AS di tengah kesulitan sektor finansial. Bank of
America jatuh 14,02 persen menjadi 13,06 dolar AS dan JPMorgan Chase
melemah 11,42 persen pada 28,47 dolar AS.
Fannie Mae, raksasa keuangan mortgage yang diselamatkan pemerintah, jatuh 19,15 persen menjadi 38 sen.
Komponen
utama Dow, ExxonMobil turun 3,81 persen menjadi 73,42 dolar AS karena
harga minyak mentah jatuh untuk kali keempat sesi berturut-turut.
Sementara

(ANTARA News) - Indonesia, bersama Turki dan Pakistan, kemungkinan
besar akan menjadi sekutu paling diandakan oleh Presiden AS ke-44 yang
akan dilantik pada 20 Januari 2009, Barack Hussein Obama Jr.
Perhatian
khusus harus diberikan kepada tiga negara Muslim besar non Arab, yaitu
Turki, Pakistan dan Indonesia, demikian John Hughes, mantan asisten
Menteri Luar Negeri AS semasa pemerintahan Ronald Reagan seperti
dikutip The Christian Science Monitor, Jumat.
"Jika demokrasi
bisa bertahan dan berkembang biak di tiga negara itu, maka akan sangat
berarti bagi (terwujudnya) impian demokratisasi di dunia Arab," kata
mantan editor the Monitor dan profesor komunikasi internasional pada
Universitas Brigham Young itu.
Pakistan menempati posisi
istimewa karena negara ini akan menjadi front terdepan dalam kampanye
menghancurkan terorisme Alqaeda dan perburuan Osama bin Laden, selain
sebagai salah satu kunci penyelesaian politik di Afghanistan.
Di
samping tiga negara itu, Presiden Barack Obama, demikian the Monitor,
akan memprioritaskan hubungan dengan negara-negara kunci seperti China,
India, Brazil, Rusia, dan tentunya Eropa Barat dan Uni Eropa.
"Dunia sudah tidak sabar melihat bagaimana Barack Obama menempatkan Amerika Serikat pasca pemerintahan Bush," kata John Hughes.
Di
dalam negeri sendiri, Obama dinantikan rakyat AS yang tak memilihnya
namun dijanjikan didengar suaranya oleh Obama, mengenai apakah ia
serius melibatkan tokoh-tokoh moderat di Partai Republik dalam
pemerintahannya.
Sementara sekutu-sekutu utamanya seperti
Inggris, Jerman dan Prancis, akan sangat menunggu seperti apakah
perubahan politik luar negeri AS yang dijanjikan Obama.
"Pada 15
November nanti Presiden Bush akan bertemu dengan 20 pemimpin dunia guna
membicarakan krisis keuangan global. Banyak dari mereka yang berharap
bertemu dengan presiden terpilih, jika pun tak bisa bersua dengannya
paling tidak mereka bisa mengetahui pandangan-pandangannya," terang
John.
Tidak heran, selain dalam upaya memesankan kesungguhannya
menjadi pemimpin kepada bangsa AS, Obama segera membentuk kabinet
transisi yang menjadi sinyal pada dunia ia siap memikul tanggungjawab
internasionalnya sebagai pemimpin dunia.
Obama pun memprioritaskan menyegerakan pemilihan menteri keuangan, menteri luar negeri dan penasehat keamanan nasionalnya.
Sementara itu, dalam memproyeksikan kebijakan luar negerinya, China sangat mungkin menduduki prioritas utama Obama.
"China
telah menjadi raksasa ekonomi baru. Negara itu menjadi eksportir
penting AS sekaligus menjadi 'bank' untuk AS," kata John merujuk
"bailout" bank sentral China di pasar keuangan global dan pembelian
sejumlah perusahaan nyaris bangkrut di AS.
India juga akan
menjadi mitra bisnis penting AS mengingat negeri ini telah menjadi
sebuah pusat telemarketing dan rekrutmen tenaga ahli bagi banyak
perusahaan besar AS. "Pada 2040, negeri ini akan menjadi perekonomian
ketiga terbesar di dunia."
Brazil juga akan menjadi mitra global
terbesar ketiga bagi AS karena negeri ini telah menjadi pusat keuangan
dan perbankan di Amerika Latin.
Meskipun sudah tidak lagi
menjadi negara adidaya, Rusia akan tetap menjadi mitra penting AS
mengingat negeri ini memegang banyak kunci permasalan di dunia,
terutama di kawasan-kawasan seperti Georgia, Asia Tengah dan Timur
Tengah.
"Khusus soal China dan Rusia, Obama mesti mendorong
demokratisasi di sana. Tapi dia mesti menjamin bahwa AS tidak berhasrat
mengasingkan mereka, melainkan mengajak mereka masuk dalam komunitas
antarbangsa," papar John.
AS harus mengubah caranya berdiplomasi
dan berhubungan dengan bangsa lain dari yang selama ini dilakukan oleh
Presiden Bush dengan mengadopsi pendekatan multilateralisme atau
kerjasama antarbangsa, bukan dengan cara mendikte.
"Multilateralisme akan bisa mengajak Korea Utara dan Iran (untuk mengurungan niat nuklirisasi mereka)," kata John Hughes

Bali, (ANTARA News) - Perenang Hongkong, Wing Yung Natasha Terri Tang
berhasil merebut emas cabang renang maraton lima kilometer putri pada
Asian Beach Games 2008 di Bali, setelah bersaing ketat dengan dua
perenang China.
Pada limapuluh meter terakhir, Tang harus
mengerahkan semua kekuatannya untuk melepaskan diri dari kejaran dua
perenang China yang berjuang tak kalah gigihnya dari Tang.
Akhirnya
Tang memenangkan perlombaan ini dengan menjadi perenang pertama yang
menyentuh garis finis dengan catatan waktu 1 jam 5 menit 29 detik,
hanya berselisih satu detik dengan perenang China, Hong Li.
Hong
mencatat waktu 1 jam 5 menit 30 detik untuk kemudian memperoleh medali
perak, sedangkan perunggu digondol rekan senegaranya, Jing Zheng, yang
berada di tempat ketiga dengan perbedaan waktu yang juga sangat tipis,
1 jam 5 menit 31 detik.
Dua perenang Indonesia, Janice Andayani dan Niken Cristiani, berhasil finish di urutan kelima dan keenam.
Andayani
mencatatkan waktu 1 jam 10 menit 48 detik, hanya 32 detik lebiih cepat
dibanding Cristiani yang mencatat waktu 1 jam 11 menit 20 detik.
Renang
marathon putri ini dilaksanakan di Pantai Semawang, Sanur, sejak pukul
07.15 WITA, dan diikuti 16 perenang dari sepuluh negara.
Untuk
renang maraton 10 kilometer putri, perlombaan akan berlangsung esok
Minggu (26/10) dengan hanya diikuti 12 perenang dari 8 negara.

(ANTARA News) - Jenazah artis Suzana (66), dimakamkan di Tempat
Pemakaman Umum Giriloyo, Kota Magelang, Jawa Tengah, Kamis (16/10).
"Sesuai
dengan wasiatnya, Suzana kalau meninggal dunia tidak mau dipertontonkan
dan diupacarakan secara besar-besaran," kata Penasihat Hukum keluarga
Suzana dengan suaminya, Clif Sangra, Bambang Tjatur Iswanto, S.H., di
Magelang, Kamis.
Ia mengatakan, relatif tidak banyak orang yang
datang baik di rumah duka di kawasan Kebon Dalem, Kelurahan
Potrobangsan, Kecamatan Magelang Utara, Kota Magelang maupun di
pemakaman Giriloyo saat prosesi pemakaman artis tersebut.
Suzana meninggal dunia di rumahnya, Rabu (15/10), sekitar pukul 23.15 WIB.
"Tadi
yang menghadiri pemakaman, Ketua RT, Ketua RW, Ketua Lingkungan,
beberapa umat Katolik, yang mendoakan di rumah duka Romo Winarto. Doa
di pemakaman dipimpin Prodiakon Melkias," katanya.
Clif Sangra, mengatakan, Suzana meninggal dunia karena menderita penyakit diabetes sejak beberapa tahun terakhir.
Selama
lima hari, sejak tanggal 1 Oktober 2008, katanya, Suzana sempat dirawat
di Rumah Sakit Harapan Kota Magelang. Setelah kondisinya berangsur
membaik lalu dia dibawa pulang.
"Tadi malam sempat minum susu
sebelum tidur, sekitar 15 menit kemudian nampak mengambil napas dalam
lalu kelihatan tertidur," katanya.
Ia mengaku, memanggil dua
dokter pribadinya masing-masing dr. Hasman dan dr. Mia Pramudianti
untuk melihat kepastian kondisi Suzana.
Ia juga memanggil pengacaranya, Bambang Tjatur Iswanto, S.H., ketua rukun tetangga, dan rukun warga setempat.
"Dokter memastikan Suzana meninggal dunia," katanya.
Pada
Kamis (15/10) pagi, katanya, Kasat Reskrim Polresta Magelang, AKP
Purwanto Hae Widodo memimpin anak buahnya melakukan identifikasi
terhadap jenazah Suzana.
Pemakaman berlangsung secara sederhana.
Suzana dimakamkan di samping kubur ibundanya, Yohana van Osch, dan di
dekat makam salah satu anaknya, Ari Adrianus, dan kakaknya, Irene
Beatrik van Osch.
Sebelum bersuami Clif, Suzana menikah dengan
Diki Suprapto dan memiliki dua anak yakni Kiki Maria dan Ari Adrianus.
Pernikahannya dengan Clif memiliki seorang anak yakni Rama Yohanes.
Pada
tahun 2006 terjadi pertengkaran di dalam keluarga Suzana hingga ke meja
hijau. Pertengkaran itu antara keluarga Clif-Suzana dengan keluarga
Abriyarso Priharto Boyoh-Kiki Maria.
Bambang Tjatur mengatakan,
keberadaan dan nomor telepon Kiki Maria tidak diketahui Clif dan Suzana
setelah pertengkaran keluarga tersebut.
"Tadi Kiki Maria tidak terlihat hadir, setelah pertengkaran itu tidak diketahui tempat tinggal dan nomor kontaknya," katanya.
Salah
seorang kakak Suzana, Wiliam, mengatakan, Kiki kini berada di
Yogyakarta dan telah dikabari bahwa ibunya meninggal dunia dan sudah
dimakamkan.
Sekitar tahun 1970 hingga 1980, Suzana, menjadi artis terkenal karena film-film horor yang dibintanginya.

A survey from George S. May International shows some quite interesting statistics about how small business owners intend to vote ihe upcoming U.S. presidential elections. The most intriguing one is that 62% of small business owners say they would cross party lines this year to vote for the candidate that they fell will do the most to help their business.
The survey polled 850 small business owners around the country, and about half of them say that they feel like their business is in jeopardy. The survey highlights the following stats as reasons for this:
- 56% say the current credit crunch has adversely impacted their business
- 23 percent cited late-paying customers and vendors
- 14 percent said their lines of credit were being pulled
- 9 percent said they were having difficulty making payroll
- 23 percent said all of the above
- 31 percent cited other ways, which were not specified

The majority (59%) of small business owners said that the $700 billion federal bailout will not help their business, leaving 41% to the contrary.
"The results of the survey show that the presidential candidates must connect with the needs of small businesses that together employ the majority of people in America," said Israel Kushnir, president of George S. May International. "Small business owners are concerned about jobs, having access to credit lines to keep their operations going, healthcare costs for their employees, and taxes. Small businesses across America don't feel that there is a $700 billion bailout for them."
Business owners are having to make sacrifices to make up for how they are being impacted. Some are dipping into their retirement savings, while others are turning to their personal savings accounts and credit cards. What kind of sacrifices are you having to make? If the American economy's not treating you too well, here's a simple solution: look overseas. And conveniently enough, the Small Business Administration has begun offering an online course called "Global Enterprise: A Primer on Exporting."
The course uses both text and audio. As explained by a press release, "It illustrates how to identify international markets, develop an export strategy, make and receive international payments, and finance trade operations, plus guidance on determining a firm's readiness and suitability for exporting." Then, if you're left wanting more, there are also 45 links to additional resources.
Since the course is free, it might well be worth spending at least a few minutes checking things out. Completion of the course will even net you an SBA certificate, which always looks nice on the wall.
Plus, there's the not-inconsiderable matter of what global enterprise is all actually about. How's $500 billion sound? That's roughly the value of the goods and services small businesses managed to send out of the country in 2007.
So hopefully, as Luz Hopewell, the SBA's director of international trade, stated, "Through the new online exporting course, the SBA will be able to help more small businesses access new markets, sell more goods overseas, and create new jobs at home."

The planned summits will "seek agreement on principles of reform"
The presidents of the US, France and the European Commission have unveiled plans for a series of summits to discuss the global financial crisis.
Speaking before talks at Camp David with Nicolas Sarkozy and
Jose Manuel Barroso, George W Bush said it was "essential that we work
together". The first summit will be held in the US after November's presidential election. The Europeans want the meetings to pave the way for talks on an overhaul of the world's financial regulatory systems.
Before he arrived at Camp David, the presidential
retreat in the state of Maryland, Mr Sarkozy warned the world could not
"continue to run the economy of the 21st Century with instruments of
the economy of the 20th Century".
Calls for action
The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says that against the
beautiful autumnal backdrop of the retreat, Mr Bush uttered words of
cold comfort to his French counterpart and Mr Barroso.

Mr Bush went on to invite world leaders to a global economic
summit in the US soon to talk about the global response to the

But Mr Bush asserted that any plan to re-think the mechanisms
of the global financial system could not be allowed to undermine the
free market.
"It is essential that we preserve the foundations of democratic
capitalism - a commitment to free markets, free enterprise and free

'New order'
President Sarkozy seemed to have a rather more sweeping vision
to deal with what he called a "worldwide crisis", our correspondent
says.
He said the crisis could offer a "great opportunity" to build
the capitalism of the future and leave behind the "hateful practices"
of the past.

He added that Mr Sarkozy had recommended New York as a
location. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has proposed using the
organisation's headquarters there as a venue.

avoid a repetition," the leaders said in their statement.
"Later summits would be designed to implement agreement on
specific steps to be taken to meet those principles," it added. Other
world leaders are to be consulted over the plan.
Correspondents say such meetings would echo the Bretton Woods conference after World War II.
At Bretton Woods, world leaders agreed to establish the
International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development, the original institution of the World
Bank Group, in an effort to prevent a repeat of the depression of the
1930s.
'Big enough and bold enough'
Earlier on Saturday, in his weekly radio address, Mr Bush sought
once again to reassure Americans about the $700bn bail-out of US
financial institutions.
Elements of the plan are similar to those earlier announced by European governments.
The president said the federal government had taken "aggressive measures" to protect financial security.
The BBC's Jane O'Brien in Washington says European leaders have
in the past blamed the US for the crisis, which started when borrowers
began defaulting on their mortgages.
But she adds that Mr Sarkozy, whose country currently holds the
EU presidency, has made it clear he wants to move away from
finger-pointing and towards a partnership with the US
